Day One. I have an extremely narrow heel and somewhat narrow foot. Solid size 39. My right foot turns in from a car accident forty years ago. I am 55, and have fallen twice, once fracturing a rib by a fall in a shower made slippy by body oil, and once badly fracturing my wrist simply by turning at an angle in a stairwell to turn around to get my dog, a particularly unfortunate fall which required three surgeries. I could not do my job as a massage therapist for six months. I wear out every single pair of high quality (Dansko or Birkenstock) in the exact same way from the right foot supination, so that they eventually encourage the supination. The shoes survive, and are still worth wearing, but I am seeking a shoe that does better than those, that won’t form to the not that great shape of my foot and imbalanced gait. I can no longer wear clogs because I fall off of them. I am doing PT and yoga but am still a high fall risk. I am always more comfortable in the security of ankle boots. I’ve decided that perhaps ankle boots that are clogs are a good bet. The initial try on seemed as if I would need to size up because my big toes made contact with the tow box and that made me think the shoe was too short for me. My right big toe is bigger and stiff and gouty. I disliked how roomy the ankle and heel were. Those two things defeated my purpose. I happen to have Dr Scholl arch inserts on hand, and put one (without using the sticky part (in case I do return these)) behind my heel and one underneath my heel. Then I added two more. Now the toe box is no longer too short and tight, and my heels and ankles feel secure and well fitted. I am just testing them out around the house on today, Day One. I consider these an investment purchase that could really assist me in walking straighter and limit my fall risk. I expect them to last a long time, and not change in structure like my other shoes have. I am excited because they are cute and fashionable. Wearing Birkenstock sandals with socks everywhere hasn’t been upping my cool! I tentatively recommend these for anyone struggling from a long term ankle injury, or knee issues, or a supination with the foot relying too much on the outer edge of the foot, making one prone to falling, especially upon turning, or on a slippy surface. Fingers crossed. I really think that perhaps the adding of the two small inserts to the heel height and two more behind the heel may just be the ticket for those of us with quite narrow heels.
